My week started on a high note, literally, as my friends and I headed up to Signal Hill for sunset. Did you know that Signal Hill got its name because ships used to get signals from here back in the day? And even to this day, every day at noon, a cannon is fired from Noon Gun on Signal Hill, and it’s one of Cape Town’s oldest traditions. Today, it’s mostly people like us sitting on the grass or the old walls with snacks, music, and a bottle of wine, waiting for the sky to turn pink and gold. As the sun went down over the ocean, we had cake, laughed way too loud, and played our favorite songs. It was one of those moments you wish could last forever, just pure happiness surrounded by friends and an amazing view.

First Thursday of the month

A few days later came First Thursdays, one of my favorite Cape Town traditions. On the first Thursday of every month, the city comes alive with open art galleries, live music, and pop-up shows, all free to explore. We went to a place called Aiko Plus, kind of like a mix between a museum and a live art venue. The whole place was alive with color, creativity, and music. Every corner had something to look at, with paintings, sculptures, and loads of creative little details that made you stop and stare. Later in the evening, we even met one of the artists whose pieces were on display, and she told us about her inspiration behind them.

When the stadium comes alive

By the end of the week, it was time for another rugby game, and this time, I actually understood what was going on. Yet, the energy and the atmosphere in the stadium were yet again unbelievable. Fans were dressed in blue, waving their Stormers flags, and cheering like their lives depended on it. The crowd’s passion is something else, even if you walk in not knowing the rules, you’ll walk out a fan.

When the game ended, the crowd didn’t go home as the celebration continued outside, and the street turned into one big dance floor. A DJ started playing, people danced while waving their Stormers flags, and sang their hearts out under the stars. With the music playing and everyone dancing, my friends and I just had to join in, it was impossible not to. It felt like the whole city came alive with energy, joy, and a sense of community.

Hermanus Whale Festival

When the weekend rolled around, we took a road trip to Hermanus, a coastal town known as the land-based whale watching capital of the world, and yes, there were whales everywhere! While we were there, Hermanus was celebrating its Whale Festival, marking the arrival of the southern right whales. We watched in awe as the whales spouted in the water, while seals drifted peacefully in the waves by the cliffside. The town itself was buzzing with live music, the smell of street food, and locals enjoying the sun. We ended the day with some homemade fruit ice cream and sat down by the cliffs and watched as the waves rolled in.

The drive there and back was out of this world beautiful. We drove past vineyards, mountain passes, and little coastal towns, with music playing in the background. Every few minutes, we rolled the windows down, snapping photos every chance we got, and we said “wow” so many times I lost count. It was the kind of drive that made me realize how beautiful South Africa really is.

Along the way, Jonas told us not to miss the Hermanus Biodiversity Walk, so of course, we had to check it out. We wandered along the cliffs, surrounded by wildflowers, sculptures facing the sea, and felt the air of salt and the sound of the waves all around us. During the walk, we met the cutest little animals called dassies, also known as hyraxes. They kind of look like chubby rabbits, but believe it or not, they’re actually distant relatives of elephants.

Ending the week on a golden note

Just like last week, I ended the week in the best way possible, with a braai on my friend’s rooftop. We grilled our dinner as the sun slowly set, the smell of the grill filled the air, and music played softly in the background. We just sat there, watching the city lights pop on one by one. Simple, but honestly, a perfect setting I’d vouch for any day.

Last week was Heritage Day in South Africa, a national holiday that celebrates the diverse cultures, traditions, and history. I spent the day wandering around Cape Town, smiling as I watched people proudly wearing their traditional clothing and enjoying a strong sense of community. Even though everyone comes from different cultures, speaks different languages, and follows different traditions, they all came together to share, celebrate, and proudly showcase their heritage. For me, it was a great reminder that no matter where we come from or what traditions we follow, celebrating our differences can bring people closer.

So how did I celebrate Heritage Day?

Our first stop was a series of museums and began at Iziko Slave Lodge, where stories of the city’s past and the lives of those brought to Cape Town as slaves were told. From there, we explored the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum and the colourful Bo-Kaap neighborhood. The colors of Bo-Kaap catch your eye, but its soul lies in its Cape Malay heritage, with the culture, everyday life, and traditions that turn a neighborhood into a living museum.

Our final stop was Zeitz MOCAA, an incredible museum of contemporary African art that blew me away with its creativity and scale. Our final stop was Zeitz MOCAA, and wow, what a place. The art was bold and creative, and the museum itself was massive and had a rooftop overlooking Cape Town. What made it even more ‘wow’ was the live DJ playing while we walked around.

After the museums, we strolled to the V&A Waterfront, where the streets were alive with performances by drummers, dancers, and buskers putting on their shows for anyone who stopped to watch. Our wanders took our hungry stomachs to Oranjezicht City Farm Market, where we ended the evening for dinner.

Local Life

Then came the weekend, and I got to experience one of South Africa’s greatest passions: rugby. It was my very first game, and the stadium was alive. The fans were loud, proud, and completely invested in every throw. I’ll be honest, I didn’t understand much of what was happening on the field, but the energy was contagious, and it didn’t take long before I was cheering right along with them.

Besides rugby, weekends here in Cape Town really are market heaven. Therefore, I have made it my mission to visit as many as I can during my time here. This weekend, I visited Straatwinkel in Imhoff Park, a cozy little market with handmade crafts, the Thrift Fest, with a field full of second-hand stalls, and lastly, the Green Point Flea Market. Each market had its own distinct character and its own kind of charm.

The perfect end to my week

Over the weekend, the weather was outstanding, so I had to do a beach day at Camps Bay. If you haven’t been, it’s absolutely gorgeous, with white sand, turquoise water, and mountains towering in the background. The place practically looks like a postcard. I spent the rest of my Sunday afternoon here, enjoying the sun, and even went swimming (and yes, it was a very, very cold swim). Later, we grabbed a late lunch at a new restaurant called Primi, where I got a glass of wine and a big bowl of pasta for just 60 sek, I know, a crazy price! And of course, no week in Cape Town is complete without a braai, the classic South African barbecue. We ended the evening on my friend’s rooftop, watching the sunset while we grilled our meat. Honestly, it felt like one of those perfect moments you wish you could bottle up and keep forever.

All in all, this week I explored a lot, and I’m really starting to get why people love Cape Town so much.

<rights>Copyright (c) 2025, Gonana South African Travel</rights>

From the Intern’s Desk: My First Weeks in Cape Town

Hello South Africa!

My first few weeks in South Africa have already been full of surprises and new experiences. First off, one thing I quickly learned is that people here love their rugby, and honestly, the energy is contagious. Even more than that, I’ve been struck by how friendly and welcoming people are, which makes settling in here feel so much easier and a lot more enjoyable. On top of that, in such a short time, I’ve already made some awesome friends who have made my time here even more fun and memorable.

Getting to Know Cape Town

The weather has been amazing, with warm, sunny days that make it almost impossible to stay inside. So, whenever I’m out of the office, I’ve been exploring as much as I can. One of my favorite spots so far is the Company’s Garden. It’s not just a pretty park; it’s actually the oldest garden in South Africa, planted back in the 1650s to grow food for passing ships on their way around the Cape. Today, it’s a green escape in the middle of the city, full of huge trees, and the friendliest squirrels you’ll ever meet. I’ve already lost count of how many times I’ve walked through it, and yes... I may have spent a little too much time following the squirrels around, trying to get the perfect photo.

A Day Around Cape Town

One of my favorite days so far was spent together with Jonas, where we explored Cape Town from morning until evening. Jonas and I started our adventure at the Castle of Good Hope, the oldest colonial building still standing in South Africa. This castle is shaped like a pentagon, with each corner designed as a bastion for cannons to defend against attacks from any direction, even though it was never actually attacked. We wandered along the thick walls, checked out the old cannons, and peeked into the colorful ceremonial rooms. The sun was shining, the sky was clear, and the viewpoint from the castle walls gave us a perfect look at the city below.

Afterwards, we made our way to the V&A Waterfront, one of Cape Town’s liveliest spots. From there, we went on a duck boat tour, which is both a boat and a bus in one, and cruised around the harbor. We learned about the old shipyards, the trading life of the city, and how the harbor has grown into the place it is today. We even spotted some seals relaxing on the docks, completely unconcerned with all the people around. Back on land, we wandered through the V&A Waterfront and caught some street performers singing and dancing.

Exploring Cape Town One Bite at a Time

On weekends, I’ve been checking out Cape Town’s markets, and the two I’ve visited so far are the Old Biscuit Mill and the Oranjezicht City Farm Market. The Old Biscuit Mill was once an old biscuit factory, and is now buzzing with local designers, artists, and food stalls that make it impossible to leave hungry. It’s the kind of place where you go in for “just a look” and somehow end up trying way too much food because everything smells and looks so good.

The Oranjezicht City Farm Market, on the other hand, feels like stepping into a cozy little village by the sea. It has this vintage, laid-back feeling with stalls filled with fresh produce, homemade breads, flowers, and street food from every corner of the world. There’s live music playing, people sitting on hay bales or long wooden tables, and it’s the kind of spot where you enjoy the atmosphere as much as the food.

Seals, Salsa, and Seaside Walks

I’ve also spent time strolling along the Sea Point promenade and the V&A Waterfront, where I even spotted a few seals playing in the water by the harbor. And a totally unexpected highlight so far has been learning how to dance salsa, something I never thought I’d try, but it turned out to be so much fun.

Cape Town Already Feels Like Home

What I love most about Cape Town so far is the atmosphere, and the open-minded culture is so vibrant and full of life. Every day feels like a chance to learn something new, whether it’s about the city’s history, its people, or just the way of life here. These first weeks have been an adventure in the best way, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of my time here has in store.

<rights>Copyright (c) 2025, Gonana South African Travel</rights>

Vergelegen: My Backyard, Your New Favourite Wine Farm

Literally. It’s a two-kilometre stroll from my house, and every weekend you’ll find me there with my two little adventurers in tow. For us, Vergelegen isn’t just a wine farm—it’s our playground, our Sunday morning sanity, and our happy place.

A Playground for Grown-ups (and Kids)

The beauty of Vergelegen is that it has something for everyone. My kids think it’s their kingdom: endless lawns to run wild on, secret garden paths that spark their imaginations, and ancient trees that look like they belong in fairy tales. For me? It’s the cappuccino at Stables Café while they chase ducks. It’s sneaking away for a glass of the Reserve Chardonnay with friends at Camphors, their flagship restaurant that dishes up food as artful as the gardens around it.

And if you’re feeling active, the estate has just opened brand-new MTB and hiking trails—a big win for those of us trying to balance wine-tasting with calorie-burning. Trust me, there’s nothing like pedalling through vineyards in the morning and swirling a glass of Sauvignon Blanc in the afternoon.

A Farm with a Future

One of the reasons Vergelegen shines above the rest is its commitment to sustainability. This isn’t just marketing fluff—over the past two decades, they’ve transformed degraded pine plantations back into flourishing fynbos landscapes. They’ve won awards for their environmental projects, including clearing invasive species and rehabilitating wetlands that now attract rare birdlife. When you walk there, you’re not just admiring beauty—you’re part of a bigger story of renewal and resilience.

A Walk Through History

Vergelegen also happens to be one of the most historically rich wine estates in South Africa. Founded in 1700 by Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel, the estate’s Cape Dutch homestead, library, and sprawling gardens whisper tales of the Cape’s colonial past. I love that I can step into a museum one moment, admire priceless antiques the next, and then—ten minutes later—watch my kids race down an oak-lined avenue that’s been there for over 300 years.

Why Vergelegen Deserved to Win

Yes, the wine is spectacular (I dare you to leave without at least a bottle of their flagship V). But Vergelegen’s real magic is how it layers experiences—nature, history, family, sustainability, food, and, of course, world-class wine. It’s not just a farm you visit once. It’s a place you keep coming back to because there’s always another corner to discover, another glass to taste, another reason to linger.

For me, Vergelegen isn’t just the Best Wine Farm Experience. It’s part of my life. It’s where my children are growing up, where my weekends begin, and where I get to remind myself, glass in hand, just how lucky we are to live in the Cape.

So, if you’re planning a trip to the Winelands, don’t just tick Vergelegen off a list—immerse yourself. Because whether you’re there for the wine, the trails, the history, or just a lazy family day under the camphor trees, you’ll leave with a full heart (and probably a very full car boot).

<rights>Copyright (c) 2025, Gonana South African Travel</rights>

The Story of Pinotage: South Africa’s Signature Grape by Jonas Sandström

Pinotage is South Africa’s signature grape varietal, a unique symbol of the country’s wine heritage and ingenuity. This bold and distinctive grape, a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault (locally known as Hermitage), was first cultivated in South Africa in 1925 by Professor Abraham Izak Perold, a viticulturist with a vision for creating a wine that could thrive in South Africa’s warm, dry climate. What began as an experimental crossing has since become a beloved varietal that reflects the spirit of South African winemaking.

The Origins of Pinotage

The journey of Pinotage began at Stellenbosch University, where Professor Perold sought to combine the delicate flavors of Pinot Noir with the resilience and high yield of Cinsault. His goal was to create a grape that would produce wines with the elegance of Pinot Noir while withstanding South Africa’s challenging growing conditions. In 1925, Perold successfully crossed the two grape varietals, creating four seeds of what would later be known as Pinotage.

The young vines were almost lost when Perold left the university, but fortunately, they were saved by a fellow researcher, Charlie Niehaus, who recognized the potential in the unique grape variety. It took several decades for Pinotage to make its mark on the wine industry, with the first commercial bottling appearing in 1959. In 1961, a Pinotage from Bellevue Wine Estate won a major award at the Cape Wine Show, propelling the varietal into the spotlight.

Pinotage Today: A Global Icon

Today, Pinotage is celebrated for its bold flavors, often characterized by notes of dark fruit, smoke, earth, and hints of chocolate or coffee. Its unique character has won over wine enthusiasts worldwide, and it continues to be a point of pride for South African winemakers. The grape is incredibly versatile, used in producing everything from robust red wines to easy-drinking rosés, and even sparkling wines.

Regions such as Stellenbosch, Swartland, and Paarl have become iconic areas for Pinotage, with winemakers experimenting with different styles, blending techniques, and aging methods to bring out its best characteristics. The result is a varietal that can range from rich and powerful to smooth and approachable, making it a favorite among both casual wine drinkers and serious collectors.

Why Pinotage is Unique to South Africa

More than just a grape, Pinotage represents South Africa’s resilience and innovative spirit. Winemakers across the country are committed to showcasing Pinotage as a symbol of their heritage, developing it into a world-class varietal that stands alongside some of the most revered wines globally. For many wine lovers, tasting Pinotage is an invitation to experience the heart and history of South African wine culture—a story of experimentation, passion, and success against the odds.

Whether enjoyed on its own or paired with South Africa’s bold cuisine, Pinotage is more than just a wine; it’s a taste of South Africa’s land, people, and legacy in every glass.

The Birth of Philani

In the late 1970s, Dr. Ingrid Le Roux arrived in South Africa and quickly realized the dire need for improved maternal and child healthcare in disadvantaged communities. Malnutrition, preventable diseases, and poverty were rampant, and the need for an effective, community-driven intervention was urgent. Inspired by the Swedish model of community health work, she founded the Philani Maternal, Child Health, and Nutrition Trust, with the goal of addressing these issues through education, empowerment, and sustainable healthcare solutions.

A Model of Community Healthcare

What makes Philani unique is its approach. Rather than relying solely on medical professionals, the program trains Mentor Mothers—local women who have successfully raised healthy children despite difficult circumstances—to support and educate other mothers in their community. These Mentor Mothers walk door-to-door, identifying malnourished children, providing nutritional support, offering maternal healthcare guidance, and ensuring early childhood development.

By empowering local women with knowledge and skills, Philani fosters a sense of ownership and dignity within the community. These Mentor Mothers are not only caregivers but also role models, proving that change is possible even in the face of adversity.

Expanding Philani’s Reach

Philani’s success in Khayelitsha has led to its expansion beyond Cape Town. The Mentor Mother program has been extended to South Africa’s Eastern Cape, as well as to Swaziland and Ethiopia, where the need for maternal and child healthcare remains urgent. By replicating its model in different regions, Philani continues to uplift communities across Africa, ensuring that more mothers and children have access to life-saving support and guidance.

Beyond Healthcare: A Holistic Approach

Philani’s impact extends far beyond healthcare. The program also includes income-generation projects, where women learn skills such as weaving, sewing, and beadwork, enabling them to support their families financially. The Philani Family Fund assists vulnerable children in accessing education, and the Early Childhood Development program ensures that young children receive the stimulation and support they need to thrive.

The Swedish Connection

Dr. Le Roux’s Swedish roots remain an integral part of Philani’s identity. Over the years, Philani has built strong partnerships with Swedish organizations, donors, and volunteers who continue to support its work. The connection between Sweden and South Africa is a testament to the power of international solidarity in driving positive change.

A Legacy of Support

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, one of South Africa’s most beloved figures, served as the patron of Philani for many years. His unwavering belief in the power of community-led change and his dedication to social justice aligned perfectly with Philani’s mission. His legacy continues to inspire the work being done to uplift and empower mothers and children in vulnerable communities.

Why Philani Matters to Us

At Gonana South African Travel, we believe that travel is about more than just visiting beautiful places—it’s about connecting with people, understanding different cultures, and supporting initiatives that make a real difference. When our guests visit Cape Town, we encourage them to explore beyond the well-known tourist spots and engage with inspiring projects like Philani. Whether through a visit to the Philani center, supporting their handcrafted products, or simply spreading awareness, every little action helps sustain this vital work.

Philani is proof that with vision, compassion, and community involvement, it is possible to break the cycle of poverty and create lasting change. As we continue to share South Africa’s beauty with the world, we also celebrate the incredible people and organizations that make this country so special.

Let’s talk value—your Swedish Kronor goes a long way here, meaning you can indulge in luxury experiences at a fraction of the cost.

Here’s how Cape Town measures up to Stockholm:

Cappuccino: R35 (SEK 20) vs. SEK 45

Petrol per litre: R24 (SEK 14) vs. SEK 21

Fine dining meal (per person): R600 (SEK 352) vs. SEK 1500

Average lunch: R150 (SEK 88) vs. SEK 250

Beer or glass of wine: R50 (SEK 29) vs. SEK 100

WHERE THE SUN IS ALWAYS SMITTEN

And let’s not forget the sunshine! The sun adores SA and graces us with its golden touch for over 300 days a year. So no matter the season, a safari here is always an adventure.

In the dry winter months (May - September), the bush thins out, making it easier to spot wildlife congregating around the dwindling waterholes. Crisp mornings give way to pleasantly warm afternoons, but come summer (October to April), the landscape transforms into a lush green paradise. Afternoon thunderstorms refresh the air, newborn animals take their first steps, and migratory birds bring bursts of colour to the skies.

Safari With Us

WHY WE CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF SA

How could we not be smitten? This land is an irresistible love affair. And we're not alone in this - Time Out Magazine announced last month that Cape Town won the "World's Best City" for 2025, after finishing second in 2024.

FOOD AS A LOVE LANGUAGE

Because our entire team lives in SA we have intimate knowledge of the foodie scene. We know when top chefs move, when once-beloved spots lose their magic, and which new openings are worth the hype.

Whether you’re craving a world-class tasting menu, a sizzling 'braai', or fresh seafood, we point you in the right direction—because in South Africa, food is not just a meal, it’s an experience. Find out more about how we assist you during your travels.

Perhaps you travelled with us recently and want to return for some more self-exploration or self-catering stays? Let us help you book the best properties in Cape Town and the Winelands thanks to our partnership with two leading property management companies in town who only work with travel designers and no private individuals.

Sadly, over the last few years we've seen a decline in the standards of AirBnbs as well as increase in fraud. And because we know the lie of the land, we can find your properties close to leading attractions that are safe and perfect for short stays.

Greyton | Overberg 2 hours from Cape Town

Greyton is a charming village that feels like a step back in time. Voted as one of SA’s most beautiful small towns, Greyton is known for its stunning mountain views, quaint streets lined with oak trees, and a thriving arts and food scene. You can explore scenic hiking and cycling trails, browse vibrant weekend markets, and taste wine from the cooler climate surrounding region.

Ballito | North Coast KwaZulu-Natal

Craving a tropical paradise blend of beach relaxation and world-class golfing? Ballito is the place to be. With the highly anticipated opening of a new hotel resort in 2026, the North Coast above Durban is on its way to becoming the Riviera of Africa right on the Indian Ocean.

Nature's Valley | Tsitsikamma National Park

For those of you who love the outdoors, Nature’s Valley in Tsitsikamma National Park is an absolute must-visit. This secluded coastal paradise is the finish to the legendary Otter Trail, one of South Africa’s most famous multi-day hikes. With pristine beaches, lush indigenous forests, and breathtaking cliffs, it’s a haven for nature lovers seeking tranquility and adventure. It is also just 20 minutes from Plettenberg Bay and 2 hours from Addo Elephant Park outside of Port Elizabeth.

Hemel-en-Aarde Valley | Hermanus 1.5 hours from Cape Town

We think the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley takes the crown for intimate tastings. Tucked between rolling mountains and the cool ocean breeze of Walker Bay near Hermanus, this valley produces some of the finest Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in the country. The boutique wineries here focus on quality over quantity, offering intimate tasting experiences with spectacular views away from the tourist buzz.

As I sit here reflecting on the past few months, I find myself struggling to find the right words. Just before Christmas, I lost my husband of 20 years. The grief is unimaginable, and there are days when the weight of it feels too heavy to bear. But as I take a breath and think about what we built together—Gonana South African Travel—I am reminded that this was always a passion project for both of us.

We dreamed of creating something that not only shared the beauty of South Africa but also made a difference in people's lives. Hosting guests, guiding them through the magic of South Africa, and sharing the warmth of this country has been surprisingly healing.

Each person who travelled with us over December and January brought a little bit of light into my life. Their stories, their laughter, and their curiosity reminded me of the joy that still exists in the world. It’s not always easy, but I know that what we’ve built at Gonana is a tribute to our shared vision.

I carry him with me in everything I do, and I am grateful for the support, kindness, and understanding that so many of you have shown. With deep gratitude and hope for the future...

<rights>Copyright (c) 2025, Gonana South African Travel</rights>

A 50th Birthday in South Africa

Dear Jonas, Joy & the Team at Gonana South African Travel!

A big thank you for a wel-planned trip for my 50th birthday. We are more than satisfied and are already talking about coming back to SA, then you will be the obvious choice for us again to "fixa biffen" as we say in Swedish. For me, it was fantastic to come back to South Africa after many years of absence, loved every second! For David (and me) the final sentence is “the best trip I have ever done”! and next year it´s David´s time to turn 50.

Your recommendations such as the lovely Harper House (a wonderful Guesthouse) along with the penguins and Cape Peninsula tour with fantastic Karen and her driver ensured the very best holiday.

A highlight for David was riding the elevator at Zeitz MOCCA (just a note that David is in the elevator business), captivated by the elevators and the Silo building. We also took the hop-on-hop-off bus which was a very good tour, and we tried a Mobile Spa that came to Harpers and gave us a very good massage and facial.

In Stellenbosch we met the lovely, happy guide Angelo who took us around in the rain, great day! Ate meat at the Fat Butcher so our bellies were about to explode, and of course, drank lots of South African wines.

A stop in Babylonstoren was a highlight and much worth a visit. From there we moved on to beautiful Paternoster and the wonderful Gonana Guesthouse. Dinner at Noisy Oyster and a bike ride on an e-bike (the first time for me) was very successful and a memory for life. Also, David was able to try out his fishing gear in the national park and managed to take a veeery quick dip in the sea at the Gonana Guesthouse beach - Bekbaai.

After that we made our way to Madikwe with the incredible Jaci's Tree Lodge was our highlight. Fantastic environment, lovely and caring staff and with our ranger Peter in the front seat, this was a great success.

We also made some new Norwegian and South African friends along the way. Finally got to see a Leopard that was missing from my Big Five collection and a wonderful celebration of my 50th birthday ended the trip with the flag flying high.

A final thank you for the bookings of all the nice restaurants we got to visit and enjoy. Joy quickly suggested lunch at Codfather in Camps Bay which was a hit, and next time we come we will try to be extra hungry when we visit The Pot Luck Club. All the restaurants have been wonderful!

A few mishaps, well - David hit his forehead and got a bump from a tree which he missed ducking for when he didn't think a flashlight was needed in the evening in Madikwe. Also he turned on the windshield wipers when he was about to change lanes when driving the car, and finally, my suitcase got stuck in Addis for 1 day, that's about it! A BIG THANK YOU and much love to you from both of us - Gonana South African Travel you've created memories for life!

<rights>Copyright (c) 2025, Gonana South African Travel</rights>

Golfing Paradise on the Garden Route

1. Simola Golf and Country Estate - Knysna

Our golfing journey begins at Simola Golf and Country Estate (FYI: Adrienne’s favourite course in the whole of South Africa), a masterpiece designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus. This 18-hole course offers awe-inspiring views of the Knysna Heads and the surrounding forests. With its rolling fairways and strategically placed bunkers, it's a challenging yet rewarding experience that captures the natural beauty of the Garden Route.

2. Pezula Championship Golf Course - Knysna

Located just a stone's throw away from Simola, Pezula Championship Golf Course offers a thrilling golf experience with breathtaking coastal views. The course weaves through indigenous forests and fynbos, creating a serene and challenging environment for golfers. It's no wonder that Pezula is consistently ranked as one of the top courses in South Africa.

3. Fancourt - George

One can’t claim to have played golf in the Garden Route unless they’ve visited Fancourt. This renowned estate offers three exceptional courses: Montagu, Outeniqua, and The Links. The Links, designed by Gary Player, is a masterpiece that has consistently earned its place among the top golf courses in the country. The fairways wind through rolling hills and lush landscapes, offering golfers a challenging yet rewarding game. A top tip is to book a spa treatment after each game and make full use of the sauna, cold pools and indoor heated pool to get rid of any niggly shoulders or necks in preparation for your next round.

4. George Golf Club - George

A short drive from Fancourt, you'll find George Golf Club, a classic parkland course that has been a part of South African golf history since 1886. Surrounded by the Outeniqua Mountains, the course features narrow fairways, undulating greens, and a beautiful setting, making it a must-play course for golf enthusiasts. Adrienne has played many amateur tournaments here so if you need any tips please do pop her an email before your visit.

5. Kingswood Golf Estate - George

Kingswood Golf Estate is a relative newcomer to the Garden Route's golfing scene but has quickly gained a reputation for its immaculate course and stunning views. Designed by Danie Obermeyer, this 18-hole championship course offers a blend of challenges and rewards as it winds through rolling terrain. Beware that the bunkers here are deep and plentiful, so practice your bunker shots when warming up for your round.

6. Plettenberg Bay Golf Club - Plettenberg Bay

Mmmm, a hidden gem and a very fun course to play! This local and well-supported golf club offers a picturesque 18-hole course with ocean views that are nothing short of spectacular. The mix of coastal winds and challenging terrain makes this course a delightful yet demanding experience.

7. Goose Valley Golf Club - Plettenberg Bay

Located in the heart of the Garden Route, Goose Valley Golf Club is another gem that golf enthusiasts must explore. The Gary Player-designed course features lush fairways, water hazards, and awe-inspiring mountain views, providing a golfing adventure that combines both beauty and challenge. A local tip when playing on a Friday would be to pop over the road for dinner and feast on a delicious pizza at Emily Moon’s Simon’s Bar.

8. Pinnacle Point Golf Estate - Mossel Bay

Our journey concludes at the magnificent Pinnacle Point Golf Estate in Mossel Bay en-route back to Cape Town. Perched on the cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean, this course offers dramatic views and a challenging layout that makes it one of South Africa's premier golfing destinations. It's no wonder that it's often referred to as the "Pebble Beach of Africa." One can also see why we suggested packing extra golf balls, apparently one player lost 10 balls on the one Par-3 during a medal round a few years ago…

All that’s left now is to pack your A-game, your clubs and sunblock, and let us handle all the details, accommodation and tee off times to create an unforgettable golfing adventure, where each round promises not only a challenging game but also an opportunity to soak in the region's incredible scenery.

<rights>Copyright (c) 2024, Gonana South African Travel</rights>

South Africa: The Ultimate Value-for-Money Destination

Affordable Accommodation

South Africa is a paradise for food lovers, and it doesn't have to cost a fortune to savour its culinary delights. Local markets offer a wide array of delicious dishes at budget-friendly prices. Don't miss out on trying traditional cuisine like boerewors (sausage), bunny chow (curry in a bread loaf), and bobotie (a spiced, baked dish - we can show you exactly how it is made on a Bo Kaap cooking tour) to experience the true flavours of South Africa.

Stunning Scenery and Natural Wonders

South Africa is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty. From the iconic Table Mountain (one of the oldest mountains in the world) in Cape Town to the picturesque Garden Route and the world-famous Kruger National Park, the country boasts a diverse range of landscapes. Many of these natural wonders are accessible with little to no entrance fees, making it an affordable destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Diverse Wildlife at a Fraction of the Cost

Safari enthusiasts often dream of embarking on wildlife adventures, but many are deterred by the high costs associated with safaris in other countries. South Africa, however, offers some of the best and most affordable safari experiences in the world. You can witness the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros) in their natural habitat without breaking the bank. Numerous private game reserves and national parks provide a range of safari options that cater to various budgets.

Rich Cultural Experiences

South Africa is a melting pot of diverse cultures and traditions, which is reflected in its vibrant festivals, art, and music. Many cultural experiences, such as attending traditional ceremonies or visiting local museums, are quite affordable and offer an opportunity to gain insight into the country's rich heritage.

Adrenaline Junkie Adventures

If you're an adrenaline junkie, South Africa has you covered with a multitude of adventure activities, such as bungee jumping, shark cage diving, and hiking. The best part is that these activities are reasonably priced compared to similar experiences in other parts of the world. The country's varied terrain provides an ideal backdrop for thrilling adventures.

Favourable Exchange Rates

The exchange rate for most international currencies against the South African Rand adds to the allure of this value-for-money destination. You'll find that your money goes a long way, allowing you to experience this country as if you were royalty!

South Africa truly stands out as one of the best value-for-money destinations in the world. Whether you're on a tight budget or looking for a luxurious getaway without the steep price tag, this is a destination for everyone.
1. Clothing:

Neutral-coloured Clothing: Opt for neutral and earthy tones like khaki, brown, and green to blend in with the natural surroundings and avoid startling wildlife.

Lightweight, Long-Sleeved Shirts and Pants: These protect you from the sun and insects while keeping you cool.

A Lightweight Jacket or Fleece: It can get chilly during early morning and evening game drives, especially from May - October.

Comfortable Closed-Toe Shoes: Sturdy, closed shoes are essential for walking safaris and for protection from thorns and insects.

Wide-brimmed Hat or Fedora: Protect yourself from the sun's harsh rays with a hat that provides shade for your face and neck - and another not-so-important reason is to be able to look the part when posting on your Instagram feed.

Swimsuit: Some lodges or camps have pools, and a swimsuit can come in handy.

Pyjamas: Choose lightweight, long-sleeved pajamas to protect against mosquitoes at night.

2. Gear:

Binoculars: A good pair of binoculars enhances your wildlife viewing experience!
Camera and Accessories: Don't forget your camera with extra batteries, memory cards, and a zoom lens to capture those incredible moments - but even a good iPhone or Android will do as you generally get quite close to the action out in the Southern African bush.
Flashlight or Headlamp: Essential for navigating around your camp at night, although, many lodges already have these in your room.
Power Bank: Keep your devices charged in case of emergencies when the power goes out, or for those dreamy nights spent lying underneath the stars on a safari.

3. Medical Supplies:

Ensure you have an adequate supply of any prescription medications you may need, although, in South Africa in particular the pharmacies are all well stocked and nearby. However, in other destinations getting medicine isn't as accessible.

4. Toiletries:

Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the strong African sun - and if possible, try to buy sunscreen that is marine friendly (let's all do our bit to keep our oceans clean).
Insect Repellent: A must-have to ward off mosquitoes and other insects, although, many lodges already have this in your room - however, rather be overprepared!
Personal Hygiene Items: Travel-sized items are practical and save space, but as mentioned above South Africa has many shops to purchase personal items from, but other surrounding countries may not be as readily stocked.

*Remember that luggage space on safari vehicles can be limited, so pack efficiently and avoid overpacking. Many safari lodges offer laundry services, so you can pack lighter and rewear clothing if needed.

5. Travel Documents:

Passport and Visa: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date.
Travel Insurance: It's crucial to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage.

6. Miscellaneous:

Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is vital, so a refillable water bottle is eco-friendly and practical.
Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the sun's glare.
Notebook and Pen: Great for journaling your experiences and jotting down wildlife sightings - you are more than welcome to share some of your notes with us afterwards!
Daypack or Safari Bag: A small backpack is handy for carrying your essentials during game drives.
Travel Adapter: Check the plug type used in your destination and bring the appropriate adapter for charging your devices.

7. Cash and Credit Cards:

Local Currency: Carry some local currency for small expenses in remote areas.
Credit/Debit Cards: Inform your bank about your travel plans to avoid card issues abroad.

By following this packing guide, you'll be well-prepared for your safari adventure with Gonana Travel - and if you have any other questions please do get in touch with Joy and the team who will be able to assist you.

<rights>Copyright (c) 2024, Gonana South African Travel</rights>

The Perfect Seasons for Swedes to Explore South Africa

While South Africa is a year-round destination, there are specific times of the year that are particularly favourable for Swedish visitors for different reasons. So here is our advice based on the 20 years we have called this country "home."

1. South African Seasons:

Spring (September to November): Spring is a delightful time to visit South Africa. The weather is mild, and landscapes burst into colourful blooms. It's perfect for exploring stunning gardens, like Kirstenbosch in Cape Town, or the wildflowers of Namaqualand up the West Coast.

Summer (December to February): South African summers are hot and sunny. This is an ideal time for Swedes to escape the cold Nordic winters and enjoy the country's beautiful beaches along the Garden Route or KwaZulu-Natal's coastline. It's also a good time for safaris in Kruger National Park, as the wildlife is more active due to the heat. Anyone up for a bush and beach holiday?

Autumn (March to May): Autumn in South Africa is a pleasant season, with milder temperatures and fewer crowds. It's a great time for wine enthusiasts to explore the vineyards of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek or to embark on the famous Route 62 road trip.

Winter (June to August): South African winters are generally mild and not something a Swedish person would call real "winter", especially in the northern regions. It's an excellent time to visit Cape Town and experience its cultural attractions, like Robben Island and the V&A Waterfront, without the summer crowds. It is also the best time to go on safari in Kruger National Park and surrounds as the dry winter causes the bush to thin out, promising more sightings as animals battle over watering holes.

2. December to February – The High Season:

From December to February, South Africa is filled with international tourists and if you're looking for a vibe then you should definitely visit then. There are music festivals, explore bustling city tours, an a range of outdoor activities from learning to surf at Muizenberg to bungy jumping off Bloukrans Bridge.

3. March to May – Shoulder Season:

If you prefer milder weather and fewer tourists - then March to May is what we like to call the "Secret Season". The landscapes are still lush from summer rains, and it's a perfect time for hiking and outdoor adventures. Plus, we often find better deals on accommodation for you during this time.

4. June to August – Off-Peak Season:

While the northern regions like Gauteng and the Kruger National Park remain relatively mild, it's the best time for Swedes who want to experience a more laid-back, less crowded South Africa. Cape Town's attractions are less busy, and it's an excellent opportunity to indulge in wine tasting and enjoy cultural experiences. However, for safari destinations June to August is often the most popular time which is why we recommend booking your safari with us at least 6 months in advance.

Whether you're drawn to the lively atmosphere of summer, the mild weather of spring and autumn, or the tranquillity of winter, South Africa offers something for every traveller - so if you're ready to start living out your dreams, say "screw it let's do it" and get in touch with us today to plan your South African holiday for 2023 and beyond!

<rights>Copyright (c) 2024, Gonana South African Travel</rights>

6 Reasons To Visit South Africa

There's a reason our Founder, Jonas Sandström moved from Stockholm to Cape Town 20 years ago...for him, South Africa is a land of diversity and enchantment. The iconic Table Mountain overlooking Cape Town is a natural wonder that offers panoramic views of the city and the ocean. The Drakensberg Mountains, with their majestic peaks and lush valleys, are a hiker's paradise. The Garden Route, stretching along the southern coastline, is a scenic drive filled with stunning beaches, dense forests, world-class golf courses and charming towns. Whether you're into mountains, oceans, or rolling countryside, Mzansi (a local name for South Africa) has it all.

2. A True Wildlife Safari Destination

The renowned Kruger National Park is home to the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros) and a multitude of other species. Imagine witnessing a lion's majestic stride, elephants bathing in rivers, and rhinos grazing in their natural habitat. Visit the historic Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, and gain insights into the country's struggle for freedom. Johannesburg, known as the "City of Gold," is a dynamic urban hub with a burgeoning arts scene and a rich history.

4. Culinary Delights

The foodie scene here is a fusion of flavours influenced by the diverse population. Indulge in a traditional "braai," a barbecue that's a cornerstone of South African culture. Sample local dishes like bobotie, a spiced meat dish with a custard topping, or try the famous South African "biltong," a dried meat snack. Pair your meals with exceptional wines from the renowned Cape Winelands, where picturesque vineyards produce some of the world's finest wines.

5. Adventure and Thrills

Take a dip in the warm Indian Ocean or go surfing on the waves of Durban's beaches. For those seeking a more serene adventure, consider exploring the breathtaking caves at the Cango Caves.

6. Warm and Welcoming Locals

South Africa is Ready to Welcome You
