The Perfect Seasons for Swedish Travellers to Discover South Africa

Posted on Thu October 22, 2026.

With its diverse landscapes, rich wildlife and vibrant culture, South Africa is a dream destination for travellers from around the world. For Swedish visitors in particular, it offers incredible value for money, along with plenty of sunshine.

Although South Africa is a year-round destination, certain periods are particularly appealing for Swedish travellers, for different reasons. So, we’re sharing our advice, based on the 20 years we’ve called this country home.

South Africa’s Weather and Seasons:

Spring (September to November): Spring is a wonderful time to visit South Africa. The weather is mild, and the landscape bursts into colour as wildflowers begin to bloom. It’s the perfect time to explore spectacular gardens such as Kirstenbosch in Cape Town or witness Namaqualand’s extraordinary wildflower displays along the west coast.

Summer (December to February): South African summers are warm and sunny. It’s the perfect time for Swedes to escape the Nordic winter chill and enjoy the country’s beautiful beaches along the Garden Route or the KwaZulu-Natal coast. It’s also a good time for safari in Kruger National Park, as wildlife is active during the warmer months. Anyone tempted by a safari-and-beach combination?

Autumn (March to May): Autumn in South Africa brings pleasant temperatures and fewer visitors. It’s a fantastic time for wine lovers to explore the vineyards of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek or set off along the famous Route 62.

Winter (June to August): Winters in South Africa are generally mild and hardly what a Swede would call a proper “winter”, particularly in the northern parts of the country. It’s an excellent time to visit Cape Town and explore cultural attractions such as Robben Island and the V&A Waterfront without the summer crowds. It’s also the best time for safari in Kruger National Park and the surrounding areas. During the dry winter months, vegetation thins out, making wildlife easier to spot as animals gather around the dwindling water sources.

December to February: Peak Travel Season: From December to February, South Africa welcomes visitors from around the world, making this an ideal period if you’re looking for a lively atmosphere. There are music festivals, vibrant city tours and plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. Learn to surf in Muizenberg, head out on a hike or take the plunge from Bloukrans Bridge on one of the world’s highest bungee jumps.

March to May: Shoulder Season

If you prefer milder weather and fewer tourists, March to May is what we like to call our “secret season”. The landscape is still lush after the summer rains, making it an ideal time for hiking and other outdoor adventures. Plus, we can often find better accommodation rates for you during this period.

June to August: Low Season

While the northern parts of the country, such as Gauteng and Kruger National Park, still enjoy relatively mild temperatures, this is an excellent time for Swedish travellers looking to experience a quieter side of South Africa with fewer visitors. Cape Town’s attractions are less crowded, leaving plenty of room to enjoy wine tastings and cultural experiences at a more relaxed pace.

For safari trips, however, June to August is often the most popular period. We therefore recommend booking your safari with us at least six months in advance to secure the best options.
